Boy, 5, saves mum and sister
AdelaideNow… Boy, 5, saves mum and sister
KAI Cobby is a brave, little boy - a hero in his mum’s eyes.
The Kangaroo Island boy, 5, snapped into rescue mode for mum, Sindy Thompson, and sister, Jada, 3, following a terrifying late-night car crash on Kangaroo Island.
The family yesterday celebrated a Mother’s Day which may not have been if not for Kai’s heroics.
Still struggling to give her boy a hug because of her serious injuries from the crash two weeks ago, Ms Thompson told how Kai raised the alarm after their car left Hog Bay Rd and rolled several times into scrubland, out of sight of passing motorists. Ms Thompson was trapped in the car.
Despite being in shock and bleeding from a deep cut on his ear, Kai showed composure to get help for his mum and sister.
He crawled out of the car to raise the alert.
He was able to wave down tour bus driver Trudi Bell, who had driven past and turned when she saw a signpost had been knocked down.
Mrs Bell called emergency services and her passengers freed an uninjured Jada from her child seat before police and Country Fire Service crews arrived.
“Kai asked (Mrs Bell) if she was a good person and could she help his mum,” Ms Thompson said. Rescuers freed Ms Thompson and she and Kai were flown to Flinders Medical Centre for treatment.
