In a chilling echo of the murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Italy, the niece of multi-millionaire Labour MP Quentin Davies was being held for murder today after allegedly slitting her lover’s throat during a violent sex game. Jessica Davies, 28, has admitted carrying out the gruesome killing of Olivier Mugnier, 24, while “horrifically drunk” on a cocktail of alcohol and drugs.

She is said to have held a knife to her 24-year-old victim’s throat in an “extreme experience” sex session at her flat in an affluent Paris suburb.

Davies was so drunk, however, that she allegedly sliced an artery - leaving her lover lying in a pool of blood.

She allegedly then stabbed him “six or seven times in anger and frustration”, according to the French police.

Mugnier died slowly, and within a few minutes of the emergency services arriving on the scene early on Sunday morning.

The killing has alarming parallels with the murder of British student Meredith Kercher who was found with her throat slit in Perugia, Italy earlier this month after what police believe was a violent sexual encounter.

Three people have been detained over her murder - her flatmate Amanda Knox, 20, Knox’s boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 24, and Congolese bar owner Patrick Diya Lumumba, 38.

All three are applying for bail today. No one has yet been formally charged over the murder.

Murder scene: Where Jessica Davies is alleged to have

murdered her 24-year-old lover

Last night detectives in Paris said Jessica Davies was “barely able to stand up, let alone speak” because of the “huge amount” she had drunk, including whisky cocktails and pints of ale laced with other spirits.

She had more than four times the drink driving limit of alcohol in her blood. There were also traces of anti-depressants in her body including Prozac. Fernch forensics experts will reportedly be analysing her blood.

A razor sharp knife was found lying next to her. She faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in jail if found guilty of voluntary homicide without premeditation. Under French law, only premeditated murder carries a life sentence.

Michel Desplan, the state prosecutor in Versailles, said she would undergo psychiatric testing.

“The facts are that she had been placed under investigation by investigating magistrates for voluntary homicide,” he was reported as saying.

“It seems to be clear that they didn’t know each other before meeting on November 11 and that both of them had drunk alcohol and perhaps consumed other substances as well.

“Mr Mugnier was killed with a knife.

“It would seem that they went to her flat to finish the night together after meeting in the bar.

“It may be that before or after having sexual relations there was an altercation that led to a gesture that was not entirely premeditated.

“However, all that needs to be verified.”

Shocked neighbours were quoted as saying that Davies has deep psychological problems.

“She seemed nice, but I think she had problems. She used to live with a man who beat her,” one neighbour told French press.

Described by friends as “a normally affectionate and sweet natured party girl who was hugely proud of her famous uncle” - she is said to have gone out on a wild drinking session after splitting up with her French fiancée, who is a jeweller.

The couple had shared a flat in St Germain-en-Laye, one of the most upmarket outer districts of the French capital, for more than four years.

But their separation upset Davies deeply, and she is said to have turned to “getting drunk and sleeping with men she picked up randomly in local bars”.

On Saturday night she was seen downing pints and knocking back shots of spirit in Sullivan’s, an Irish pub just five minutes walk from her flat.

She then began chatting to an unemployed Frenchman nicknamed “Fou-Fou”, or “Funtime”, who was well known as a “ladies’ man”, said witnesses.

Soon after midnight, Davies is believed to have invited her victim back to her first floor flat for sex.

A police source said: “The young woman was dead drunk and came up with a strange reason for why the young man had died.

“The suspect said she had only met the young man that evening and proposed that they go back to hers to finish the night.

“It may have been under the affect of the alcohol and anti-depressants, but she said the cut to his throat was made in the course of a sex game. Repeated stabbings - maybe six or seven - followed.

“She made a rambling phone call, but we were able to trace the address and arrived around 2.30am. The 24-year-old victim’s heart stopped beating at 3.06am.

“After our first interview we took the suspect back to the station and put her in a cell to sober up. She was the only witness to the crime. It was impossible to get a word out of her the next day, but she has not changed her story since.”

A spokesman for Mr Davies’s Westminster office said last night: “This is a private matter. Mr Davies is away.”

She refused to comment further. A Paris police spokesman said Jessica Davies was being investigated for murder, and was in custody.

Bail had been refused, but “family members, including some from England, were visiting her”.

Mr Davies, 63, is MP for Grantham and Stamford, who defected from the Tory party to Labour on the eve of Gordon Brown becoming Prime Minister.

He began his career in the diplomatic service but then became a banker for City firm Morgan Grenfell, where he quickly climbed through the ranks.

Davies, who has two sons with his French wife Chantal, is thought to be worth at least £2.5 million and retains a string of consultancies and directorships.
