A HOTEL patron died after bouncers held him on the ground in a headlock, a committal hearing in Brisbane was told today.
Dean Barry Christopher Tapin, 41, of Manly West, Vaughan Thomas, 27, of Fortitude Valley and Richard Allan James, 39, of Norman Park, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court charged with the murder of William Armando Amaya, 25, at the Royal Exchange in Toowong in May last year.
The court was told the three were among a number of security guards who intervened to stop a fight between Mr Amaya and another man on May 20 last year.
Witness Alana Allman said Mr Amaya was acting aggressively and struggled with security guards as they removed him from the hotel.
“I thought they had to hold him because he was a very large man and could thrash back at any time,” she said.
“They didn’t have him completely under control until they had him outside.”
The bouncers forced Mr Amaya onto the footpath where they restrained him on the ground.
She said Mr Thomas held Mr Amaya in a headlock while Mr Tapin held his arms behind his back.
The court was told Mr Amaya stopped moving and the bouncers released their grip after about 90 seconds to check his pulse.
Mr Tapin then tried to revive Mr Amaya with CPR.
The court was told Mr Amaya had intervened in a fight to protect a friend.
The hearing continues tomorrow.
