252 employees, including 200 teachers, are apparently being displaced by the St. Louis public school system. The teachers’ union says the district broke the law and they have filed a lawsuit.

Displacement means employees lose their positions but can apply for similar jobs at other schools. That’s done by seniority. But Local 420 says that’s not what happened last week.

The union says the board violated state and district policies.

It says employees started receiving letters May 14th and were told they had until the 18th to apply for vacant positions for next year. The notification comes one week after the board approved an early retirement buy-out plan for teachers and other employees.

District administrators had no comment. Their attorney, Ken Broston, says he’s not yet read the lawsuit but promised to check into the allegations.

The lawsuit comes less than one month before the district is scheduled to become disaccredited.
