A 16-year-old girl is being held in Belleville in connection with a bank robbery Tuesday.

According to Belleville police:

The teen-ager entered the the U.S. Bank at 6201 W. Main Street shortly after noon carrying large white vinyl bag.

She approached a teller and said she wanted to open an account. The girl then allegedly handed the teller a note demanding money. She did not display a weapon.

She fled with an undetermined amount of cash.

The girl fled in a green GMC Jimmy, witnesses told police.

A short time later, a girl fitting the same description walked into a nearby Regions Bank. Unaware of the earlier robbery, a teller thought the girl looked suspicious. The girl left without approaching a teller. Bank employees followed her out and saw her get into a green GMC Jimmy. They got the license plate and called police.

Police found the vehicle and driver, an 62-year-old ESL man, later in the day in the 6200 block of Laura Lane in East St. Louis. The man is being held on charges unrelated to the robbery. Authorities have not released his name.

The girl was arrested in the 2100 block of State Street in East St. Louis. Police said they recovered some money. The girl is from Cahokia, police said, but her name is not being released because she is a juvenile.
