A mad dash for cash brought traffic to a screeching halt on a Spokane highway.

Thousands of dollars floated through the air with drivers trying to grab their share on Sunday.Dollar bills were flying from a camper on I-96.

People hit the brakes, grabbing cash.

Trooper Matt Weberling of the Washington State Patrol says, “When we got to the seen, there was still money blowing all around.”

As for the driver of the camper? He didn’t know the money was there. His boss put it there, about $14,000 stashed in the vents of this trailer.

Trooper Weberling says, “He had stashed it underground for quite some time, and through some phone calls and everything, we determined that he had taken the money out of the ground, placed it up in the vent to dry and forgot about it.

For troopers who responded, it was somewhat of a nightmare.Trooper Weberling says, “It was the first time we’ve encountered money blowing around on the Interstate. We just mainly wanted to keep everybody safe. When you hear about people exiting and trying to get money out in the middle of a freeway, that’s more of a concern than the money.”

And the people who made the dash for the cash?

Most of them gave it back, but others decided to keep it for themselves.

State troopers have recovered about $7,000 of the almost $14,000
