(KMOV) — Wal-Mart has announced a new program to donate 70 million pounds of food from Sam’s Clubs to food banks across the country.

The announcement came just months after News 4 Investigates revealed just how much food from the store was going to waste.

Sam’s club has donated dry food products to food banks for quite some time.

But News 4 Investigates found that things like meats and bakery items were being thrown away.

When News 4 showed you undercover video of perfectly good meats and bakery items being thrown away December, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart said their concern was they couldn’t guarantee the safety of those perishable items.

But, Missouri law shields those who donate items in good faith, from lawsuits.

Our investigation prompted letters to Wal-Mart from lawmakers including Missouri Governor Matt Blunt.

Wal-Mart announced Wednesday that Sam’s Club will begin donating most of those items.

They say their issue all along was finding a way that the items could get from the store to food banks and still be usable.

There are still some items not being donated such as fish products, which Wal-Mart says few pantries accept anyway because of safety issues

Also prepared foods, including things like rotisserie chickens which Wal-Mart says have to be kept at a certain temperature during the day and they can’t in good conscience freeze those items again to donate them.
