The crime happened seven months ago in St. Charles, MO and more charges are still possible.
On May 18, paramedics were dispatched to this dumpster at a Mexican restaurant in St. Charles. They were that told a woman had miscarried.
Amidst the trash they’d found a baby girl, ten weeks premature. She was in critical condition with a dangerously low body temperature, now, seven months later, prosecutors have charged the baby’s mother Jessica Phillips, 22, of Florissant with first degree assault for leaving her child for dead.
Police say that while at work, Phillips became ill, went to a hospital, and claimed to have just had a miscarriage. Hospital staffers quickly learned the baby’s location though no one knew she was alive.
Officials say that the garbage bags helped keep the baby warm and she’s just fine now.
They also say that this case is very complicated and that the investigation continues.
No comment on whether Phillips’s boyfriend could be charged.
If convicted of first-degree assault, Phillips faces up to 15 years in prison.
The baby is now in state custody
