A WOMAN spent at least 36 hours trapped inside her overturned car in scorching heat after rolling her vehicle multiple times on a remote Northern Territory highway.

Withstanding 34C temperatures, the 36-year-old was found conscious in the vehicle near Renner Springs, north of Tennant Creek, on Sunday morning.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released, told police that she had rolled the Toyota Echo the previous Friday night after falling asleep.

Fortunately passing tourists saw her vehicle in scrub early Sunday and called police immediately.

Sergeant Nathan Finn from NT Police said he had never heard of someone surviving so long after an outback crash.

“It’s just unheard of,” Sgt Finn said.

“She was in good spirits when we got to her.

“She kept saying she was sorry… we had to keep reassuring her it was okay.”

He said when emergency services arrived on the scene they found that the car’s roof was barely hanging on, allowing them to peel it back by hand.

The speed limit along that stretch of road is 130km/hr, police said.

The woman was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.

Sgt Finn said fatigue was the cause of the crash.
